Speaking Practice & Self-Assessment: Part 2 (Cue Card / Long Turn)

Format: IELTS Speaking Part 2 — one minute to prepare, then speak for up to two minutes on a cue card topic

Choose a cue card, take one minute to prepare and make notes, then record yourself speaking for up to two minutes, just like the real IELTS Speaking Part 2. Play your answer back and compare it to a model answer — there's no auto-scoring, just an honest self-assessment against the same criteria an examiner would use.

How this helps your speaking

  1. Choose a cue card below — each has a topic and four points you should cover.
  2. Pick Practice Mode (flexible prep and speaking time) while you're learning the format, or Exam Mode (strict 1-minute prep, strict 2-minute speaking limit) to test yourself properly.
  3. Use the 1-minute preparation time to jot down notes, just as you would in the real test — you won't be able to read from a full script while speaking.
  4. Recording starts automatically once you begin speaking. Play your answer back, reveal the model answer, then work through the band-descriptor checklist.

Tips for the Cue Card (Long Turn)

Microphone access needed: This activity records your voice locally in your browser so you can play it back — nothing is uploaded or saved anywhere. Your browser will ask for microphone permission the first time you start speaking.

Self-Assessment for This Cue Card

Fluency & Coherence
  • I spoke for close to two minutes without long, silent pauses
  • I covered all (or nearly all) of the bullet points on the card
  • My answer had a clear beginning, middle, and end, not just a list of facts
Lexical Resource
  • I used a range of vocabulary, including some less common words or phrases
  • I avoided repeating the same word or phrase too often
Grammatical Range & Accuracy
  • I used a mix of simple and complex sentences (e.g. relative clauses, time clauses)
  • I used a range of tenses accurately (e.g. past simple, past continuous, present perfect)
Pronunciation
  • Listening back, my speech was clear and easy to understand throughout
  • I used natural stress, rhythm, and intonation rather than a flat, monotone delivery
