This is the opening topic in our Pakistan & India Studies strand. This article covers Pakistan's founding history, key figures, national symbols, provinces, and important dates — the foundational facts that appear in nearly every Pakistan Studies exam and GK test, laid out clearly in one place.

2.The Founding of Pakistan

Pakistan's creation rests on the Two-Nation Theory — the idea that Muslims and Hindus of British India formed two distinct nations, each deserving self-determination. The formal demand for a separate Muslim state was made in the Pakistan Resolution, passed on 23 March 1940 at the All-India Muslim League's session in Lahore. Pakistan achieved independence from British rule on 14 August 1947, becoming the world's first country founded specifically as a homeland for Muslims.

3.Founding Fathers & Key Figures

FigureRole
Muhammad Ali JinnahFounder of Pakistan ("Quaid-e-Azam," meaning "Great Leader"); first Governor-General
Allama Muhammad IqbalPoet-philosopher who first articulated the idea of a separate Muslim state, in his 1930 Allahabad Address; regarded as the national poet
Liaquat Ali KhanPakistan's first Prime Minister
Fatima Jinnah"Mother of the Nation"; sister of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and an influential independence movement figure
Commonly Confused

Jinnah is the founder of Pakistan; Iqbal is credited with the idea of Pakistan. Both titles matter and are frequently tested separately — mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes in Pakistan Studies exams.

5.The National Anthem

Pakistan's national anthem, "Qaumi Taranah," has an unusual history: the music was composed first, by Ahmad G. Chagla, and the lyrics were written afterward to fit it, by the poet Hafeez Jalandhari. It was officially adopted in 1954 and is sung almost entirely in formal, Persianised Urdu, using vocabulary shared with Persian poetic tradition.

6.The National Emblem

Pakistan's state emblem, adopted in 1954, features a shield divided into four sections representing the country's four major crops — cotton, wheat, tea, and jute — topped by a crescent and star, and surrounded by a wreath. Below the shield, a scroll carries the national motto in Urdu: "Iman, Ittehad, Nazm" — Faith, Unity, Discipline.

7.Provinces & Territories

Province / TerritoryCapital

SindhKarachi

Azad Jammu & KashmirMuzaffarabad

Fast Fact

K2, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, is the world's second-highest mountain at 8,611 metres, part of the Karakoram range. Pakistan's longest river, the Indus, flows the length of the country from north to south and gave the historic Indus Valley Civilisation its name.

8.Key National Days

DateOccasion
5 FebruaryKashmir Solidarity Day
23 MarchPakistan Day (marks the 1940 Pakistan Resolution)
14 AugustIndependence Day (1947)
6 SeptemberDefence Day
9 NovemberIqbal Day (Allama Iqbal's birthday)
25 DecemberQuaid-e-Azam Day (Jinnah's birthday)
"Quaid-e-Azam Day, 25 December, is Pakistan's Independence Day"

These two dates are among the most frequently mixed up in Pakistan Studies tests.

The fix: Independence Day is 14 August, marking the day Pakistan actually became independent in 1947. Quaid-e-Azam Day, 25 December, celebrates Muhammad Ali Jinnah's birthday instead — a separate national holiday honouring the founder, not the founding date itself.

Real-World Example

Every 14 August, the national flag is hoisted at government buildings nationwide and the national anthem is played at official ceremonies — the same anthem and flag whose full history you've just learned.

Did You Know?

Pakistan's national anthem is one of the few in the world composed as music first — the tune existed for roughly a year and a half before Hafeez Jalandhari wrote lyrics specifically to match its rhythm and structure.
