How Is Water Formed?

Water is a compound made from two elements, hydrogen and oxygen. One water molecule has 2 hydrogen atoms joined to 1 oxygen atom, so its formula is H₂O.

The atoms are held together by covalent bonds, where atoms share electrons. Water forms when hydrogen gas burns in oxygen and releases heat. Chemists write the reaction like this:

2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

In this activity you will build a water molecule yourself:

  1. Meet the hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
  2. Gather 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
  3. Bond them by sharing electrons.
  4. Balance the chemical equation.
  5. Test yourself with a quick quiz.
