Enzyme Activity
Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts: they speed up chemical reactions in living things without being used up. Each enzyme works on one kind of molecule, called its substrate, which fits into a special shape on the enzyme called the active site.
Substrate + enzyme → enzyme–substrate complex → products + enzyme (unchanged)
- Watch the lock and key model work.
- Find the substrate that fits the active site.
- Explore how temperature changes enzyme activity.
- Find the best pH for three different enzymes.
- Take a five-question quiz.
